a brief biography…

Dr. Smriti Nayan is an Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck surgeon, a specialty more commonly known as ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat). Her practice includes all aspects of ENT and she sees both adults and children. She has a special interest in nasal and sinus disease, pediatric otolaryngology, and head and neck surgery (skin cancers in the head and neck region, thyroid and salivary gland disease). Her practice involves both hospital and clinic-based work. In addition to English, she speaks French and Hindi fluently and is happy to see patients who are more comfortable in any of these languages. She has hospital appointments at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital.

Dr. Nayan completed her medical degree and residency training at McMaster University. She then went on to complete further sub-specialization in the area of rhinology (the ENT sub-specialty related to the nose and sinuses) and anterior skull base surgery at the Université de Montréal. During this year, she was awarded the American Rhinologic Society – Best Clinical Project award for the research project “A Novel Treatment Adjunct for Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory Disease (AERD)”, where it was demonstrated that a low-salicylate diet helped improve the nasal polyps in patients with AERD.

She also went on to pursue a two year Masters of Science in Health Science Education degree at McMaster University which she completed in 2016 and had been awarded the School of Graduate Studies Scholarship for both years she was enrolled in the Masters. She now holds an appointment with McMaster University and Western University as an Assistant Clinical Professor (Adjunct) in the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. She is a passionate educator and has a very active involvement with the undergraduate medical school and ENT residency programs while still being involved with clinical research. She has also recently been appointed the Assistant Program Director as well as Chair of the Competence Committee for the residency program at McMaster University. She has published 16 peer-reviewed papers and 2 book chapters, is a peer-reviewer for the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery scientific journal as well as the International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology journal and has been a presenter at numerous conferences internationally.  Dr. Nayan loves working in Cambridge.  She had first worked in Cambridge in the summer of 2008, while still a medical student. It was at that time she had an introduction to the community practice of ENT.  She remembers being very impressed with the hospital, the collaboration amongst the health care professionals and the friendliness of the community.  Since joining the team at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, she and her husband have also made this vibrant community their home and are thrilled to be raising their two children here.
